UAE joins NASA’s Lunar Gateway program

In the esteemed presence of UAE President His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan and His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, the UAE has declared its collaboration in the development of a module for NASA’s Lunar Gateway Station. This joint effort includes participation from the USA, Japan, Canada, and the European Union, and it also encompasses sending the first Emirati astronaut into lunar orbit as an integral part of the initiative.

The UAE’s involvement in constructing the Crew and Science Airlock module on the Lunar Gateway Station aims to bolster its global standing in space science and technology. President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan emphasized the commitment to international partnerships, stating that the UAE’s participation reflects dedication to advancing knowledge and progress for humanity.

Expressing pride in national institutions and teams, Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan reiterated the leadership’s unwavering support for international missions and events contributing to the sustainable development of the country and the global community.

Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum highlighted the UAE’s substantial experience in the space sector and its ambitious pursuit of future projects. He emphasized the significance of the project, portraying it as a groundbreaking initiative for humanity’s return to the Moon and as a base for future missions toward Mars.

The announcement ceremony witnessed the presence of several high-profile figures, including Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Sheikh Maktoum bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Sheikh Saif bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan, and other ministers and officials.

As the fifth partner in the Lunar Gateway Station project, the UAE’s contribution is considered a historic achievement in the space sector. In collaboration with NASA, this initiative symbolizes humanity’s renewed ambition to explore the Moon and lay the groundwork for future missions to Mars.

The UAE will be responsible for developing the Crew and Science Airlock, serving as the entry and exit point for missions and astronauts traveling to the Moon’s surface. The Airlock, with dimensions of 10×4 meters and a weight of 10 tonnes, will be managed and operated by the UAE and play a crucial role in maintaining a safe environment for astronauts.

The Mohammed Bin Rashid Space Centre (MBRSC) will oversee the Airlock’s management, maintenance, and operation, ensuring its effectiveness as part of the Lunar Gateway Station. The Gateway, a key component of NASA’s Artemis missions, aims to support long-term lunar exploration and future missions to Mars.

The UAE’s participation in the Gateway project signifies a monumental advancement in international space collaboration, positioning the nation as a key leader in the global space community. It grants the UAE a permanent seat and priority access to scientific and engineering data, elevating its role in lunar and space exploration. The project aligns with the UAE’s vision of contributing actively to human presence on the Moon and advancing space missions toward Mars.
