In an ambitious move towards environmental responsibility, Western Digital Corp. has unveiled its new corporate sustainability targets, reinforcing its commitment to reducing its global environmental footprint. The targets are designed to accelerate the company’s sustainability efforts by focusing on key areas such as renewable energy, emissions reduction, water conservation, and waste management.
By 2030, Western Digital aims to power all its global operations with 100% renewable energy, a significant step towards minimizing its carbon footprint. In addition, the company has set a target to achieve net zero Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions across its operations by 2032, further solidifying its commitment to combat climate change.
Water conservation is also a priority for Western Digital, as it plans to reduce water withdrawals by 20% by 2030. By implementing efficient water management practices, the company aims to minimize its impact on local water resources and contribute to sustainable water usage.
Furthermore, Western Digital has set an ambitious goal of diverting over 95% of its operational waste from landfills by 2030. Through effective waste management strategies, the company seeks to reduce its environmental impact and promote a circular economy.
Irving Tan, Executive Vice President of Global Operations at Western Digital, expressed the company’s dedication to environmental stewardship, stating, “Committing to these new, aggressive sustainability targets furthers Western Digital’s priority to be a good environmental steward and put forth data-driven goals and metrics to hold our organization accountable for mitigating the impacts of climate change.”
Western Digital has already made significant progress in its sustainability journey, including running certain facilities on renewable energy and reducing energy consumption per unit produced. The company’s dedication to sustainability has been recognized by industry organizations, such as the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi), which approved Western Digital’s goals to reduce emissions by 42% by 2030.
Curtis Price, VP Sustainability Research at IDC, emphasized the importance of companies taking action on sustainability, stating, “As sustainability becomes a business priority for organizations, companies that commit to and show progress towards achieving actionable sustainability targets will be recognized as sustainability leaders in the industry.” Western Digital’s new commitment to net zero emissions, water and waste reduction, and renewable energy solidifies its position as an industry leader and paves the way for other companies to follow suit.
