Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi announced the UAE’s first robotic-assisted Deep Inferior Epigastric Perforator (DIEP) flap breast reconstruction. The surgery was performed on a breast cancer survivor who had previously undergone a mastectomy. This milestone reflects the hospital’s use of advanced technology in reconstructive surgery.

The procedure combines robotic technology with microsurgical expertise. It allows surgeons to harvest abdominal tissue through small incisions while preserving muscle and fascial integrity. The tissue is then used to reconstruct the breast, restoring a natural shape using the patient’s own tissue.

Dr. Georges-Pascal Haber, CEO of Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi, revealed, “Performing the UAE’s first robotic-assisted DIEP flap breast reconstruction shows how committed we are to pushing the boundaries of what’s possible in healthcare here in Abu Dhabi.”

Dr. Raffi Gurunian, Staff Physician at the Integrated Surgical Institute, reported that robotic-assisted reconstruction improves accuracy and reduces many side effects compared to conventional DIEP flap surgery. He added that the approach helps minimise abdominal issues, shortens recovery time, and reduces postoperative pain.

  • The robotic system provides three-dimensional visualisation and wristed instruments for precise dissection of blood vessels.
  • The minimally invasive technique helps patients recover faster with less trauma to the abdominal wall.

This procedure offers new hope to breast cancer survivors seeking natural and minimally invasive reconstruction options.
