Meta, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram, will invest more than US$9.1 billion to build its first AI data centre in Canada. The company announced the project on Wednesday, marking its largest AI data centre outside the United States.

The new AI data centre will be located in Sturgeon County, Alberta. It will be powered by a natural gas-fired power plant to support Meta’s growing artificial intelligence infrastructure and computing needs.

Moreover, Meta said the facility will use a closed-loop cooling system designed to reduce environmental impact. The system will not draw water from surrounding natural sources, helping conserve local water resources.

In addition, the company plans to invest US$42 million in local infrastructure. The funding will support improvements to roads and water systems in the surrounding community.

The investment reflects Meta’s continued expansion of its global AI infrastructure as demand for artificial intelligence computing continues to grow. Once completed, the AI data centre will become Meta’s first facility of its kind in Canada and its largest outside the United States.

Meta said the new AI data centre will strengthen its AI capabilities while also contributing to local infrastructure development in Alberta through its additional investments.
