The UAE has successfully launched its SEO satellite, marking a major milestone for the country’s space ambitions. The National Space Science and Technology Centre (NSSTC) at the United Arab Emirates University (UAEU) confirmed the launch aboard a Long March 2C carrier rocket from the Taiyuan Satellite Launch Centre in China.

The launch is part of the centre’s broader push to develop national space projects. Additionally, it aims to strengthen UAE capabilities in the sector and support the country’s wider ambitions in science, technology and innovation.

Beyond the technical achievement, the SEO satellite project also focuses on building national talent. Emirati researchers and engineers are gaining hands-on experience in satellite design, development and operations, working alongside international partners throughout the process.

Furthermore, the mission is expected to deliver real-world benefits. The SEO satellite will support scientific research and technology applications tied to sustainability and future development, providing valuable data for environmental protection, natural resource management, and informed planning and decision-making.

Speaking on the achievement, Salem Al Qubaisi, Director-General at the UAE Space Agency, said the successful launch aligns with the UAE’s vision and National Space Strategy. He noted that it strengthens the country’s position among global leaders in the space sector, while expanding the role of advanced science and technology in driving sustainable development and the knowledge economy.

He also emphasised that the mission underscores the importance of cooperation between national and academic institutions. In his view, such partnerships are essential to building an advanced space ecosystem and developing Emirati capabilities for the future.

Echoing this sentiment, Dr. Nabil Mohammed Al Bastaki, Director of the National Space Science and Technology Centre, said the project reflects the centre’s ongoing commitment to advancing national space initiatives. He added that it continues to strengthen UAE capabilities, while giving researchers and engineers practical expertise in satellite design, development and operations. In conclusion, the successful launch of the SEO satellite represents a significant step forward for the UAE’s space sector. As the country continues to invest in advanced technology and homegrown talent, the SEO satellite stands as a clear signal of its growing role in the global space community.
