The FAA flight suspension affected several major airports across the US Northeast on Monday after a telecommunications outage disrupted air travel for thousands of passengers.

The disruption was caused by a severed fibre-optic cable in New Jersey. As a result, flights were paused at John F. Kennedy International Airport, Newark Liberty International Airport, LaGuardia Airport, Westchester County Airport, Boston Logan International Airport, Philadelphia International Airport and Teterboro Airport in New Jersey.

US Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy said on X that an Amtrak construction crew accidentally cut a fibre-optic line in New Jersey. The incident caused the telecommunications outage and led to the FAA flight suspension across the Northeast.

Meanwhile, the outage disrupted airport operations and affected passengers across the region. The incident highlights how telecommunications infrastructure can affect critical transportation services when connectivity is interrupted.

The affected telecommunications lines were subsequently repaired. Consequently, airport operations across the region began resuming after the FAA flight suspension was lifted.
