The Environment Agency,Abu Dhabi (EAD) has announced that it received its second Carbon Neutrality Certification from Applus+.

Applus+ is a verification agency accredited by the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). This milestone makes EAD the first regulatory body in the UAE to receive this certification twice.

EAD revealed that this achievement further confirms its commitment to tackling climate change and promoting environmental sustainability in Abu Dhabi.

Dr. Shaikha Salem Al Dhaheri, Secretary General of EAD, commented on the announcement. She stated that receiving the certification again reflects EAD’s dedication to building a sustainable future for Abu Dhabi.

She reported that EAD offset its carbon emissions for the period from 2020 to 2022. The agency aims to inspire other government entities and encourage the private sector to adopt sustainable practices.

According to EAD, any greenhouse gas emissions were assessed by GE3S and verified by Applus+.

EAD’s carbon neutrality approach included identifying and addressing emissions from:

  • Energy consumption in buildings and chilled water
  • Waste generation and fuel use in vehicles and generators

To reduce its environmental footprint, the agency is taking several steps.

It is upgrading its vehicle fleet to hybrid models to cut fuel use and emissions. It has also replaced all lighting systems with energy-efficient LED lights and sensors. Smart water systems were installed to optimize usage and reduce waste.

Additionally, EAD reported that it adopted environmentally friendly air-conditioning systems at all its facilities.

In its ongoing sustainability efforts, the agency is integrating solar panels into new projects. These projects are aligned with LEED Zero Carbon standards to reduce energy use and emissions.

EAD emphasized that this achievement supports broader climate action goals. The agency continues to lead in environmental stewardship and aims to inspire other organizations to adopt carbon management strategies.
