Apple has announced watchOS 26, a major software update for Apple Watch. The company revealed a redesigned interface, enhanced intelligence, and new fitness features to make everyday use more personal, seamless, and proactive.
According to Apple, the new design introduces Liquid Glass elements, making the Smart Stack, Control Center, Photos face, and app navigation more expressive. Despite the update, the software retains its familiar layout.
Apple Intelligence plays a central role in watchOS 26. It powers the new Workout Buddy, which delivers real-time, spoken fitness insights using user data like heart rate, distance, and Activity ring progress.
Workout Buddy uses on-device processing and voice models from Fitness+ trainers to deliver motivation. The tool also recognizes milestones and provides summaries after each session.
Apple reported that the Workout app also gets a major refresh. Users will now find four corner buttons for easier access to features like Custom Workout, Pacer, and Race Route. Music and podcasts can auto-play during workouts, with personalized suggestions from Apple Music.
The Smart Stack is more proactive in watchOS 26. It uses contextual data, sensors, and routines to show hints, such as workout suggestions or safety tools like Backtrack. Smart Stack widgets also adopt the new Liquid Glass design.
In Messages, Apple Watch now supports Live Translation with Apple Intelligence. This feature allows texts to be translated instantly on the watch. Users can also respond with translated replies. Apple said this feature is available on Series 9, Series 10, and Ultra 2 with a compatible iPhone.
The update also improves message suggestions using conversation context. Smart Replies are now more accurate with an upgraded language model. Backgrounds set on iPhone appear in messages on Apple Watch.
Apple introduced a new one-handed wrist flick gesture to manage notifications. The motion, powered by machine learning and onboard sensors, lets users dismiss alerts, silence timers, or end calls. It joins the existing double tap gesture for hands-free use.
Notifications now automatically adjust their volume based on ambient noise, ensuring users stay aware without disturbing others.
Other watchOS 26 features include:
Apple also revealed new APIs for developers. These allow third-party apps to adopt the new design and enhance their functionality within Smart Stack and Control Center. Developers can use SwiftUI, Control Widget API, and Smart Stack Relevance API for more interactive experiences.
The company confirmed watchOS 26 will be available later this year.
