Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) has set a new world record for the lowest electricity customer minutes lost (CML), reaching just 0.82 minutes per year, about 49 seconds.

The announcement was made by Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, MD and CEO of DEWA. He confirmed that the utility has surpassed its own previous record of 0.94 minutes in 2024. This marks an improvement of around 13 percent.

Moreover, Al Tayer highlighted the role of advanced technologies in achieving this milestone. He stated that DEWA is leveraging Fourth Industrial Revolution tools, especially artificial intelligence, and integrating them fully into its strategies and operations.

In addition, he noted that the smart grid remains a core pillar of DEWA’s strategy. It supports delivering services with high availability, reliability, and efficiency. This also aligns with broader national goals such as the Dubai 2040 Urban Master Plan and the Dubai Economic Agenda (D33), which aim to position Dubai among the world’s top three cities.

Furthermore, DEWA is investing AED 7 billion in its smart grid initiative through 2035. The system enhances energy transmission and distribution efficiency. It also reduces outages, minimises losses, improves load management, and strengthens customer satisfaction.

One of the key initiatives is the Automatic Smart Grid Restoration System. It is the first of its kind in the Middle East and North Africa. The system enables round-the-clock remote control, monitoring, and management without human intervention. As a result, it can automatically detect faults, isolate them, and restore services faster, improving overall reliability.

Meanwhile, DEWA has significantly reduced CML over the years. It dropped from 6.88 minutes per year in 2012 to just 0.82 minutes in 2025. This performance is notably lower than the average of around 15 minutes recorded by leading utility companies in the European Union.

Overall, this achievement reinforces DEWA’s position as a global benchmark in power reliability and smart infrastructure.
