Dubai has placed environmental AI at the heart of a new environmental conference. The Dubai Environment and Climate Change Authority (DECCA) launched the first edition of the Dubai Environment Conference and Exhibition (DECE) this week, bringing together policymakers, scientists, and industry representatives to discuss the emirate’s sustainability priorities.

A New Platform for Climate Dialogue

H.H. Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum, Chairman of the Dubai Supreme Council of Energy, inaugurated the event. It is being held at the Grand Hyatt Dubai over two days, from 7 to 8 September 2026, under the theme “Protecting Our Environment… Securing Our Future.”

Dr. Amna Al Dahak, UAE Minister of Climate Change and Environment, attended the opening ceremony. Representatives from international environmental organisations, national institutions, and public and private sector bodies also joined the proceedings.

The conference aligns with several national frameworks. These include the UAE Net Zero 2050 Strategy, the National Green Agenda 2030, the Dubai Economic Agenda D33, and the Dubai 2040 Urban Master Plan.

Six Themes, One Shared Goal

The two-day programme is structured around six key themes. Together, they reflect Dubai’s most pressing environmental priorities: biodiversity, natural resources, food security, climate change, the circular economy, and environmental AI.

Each theme is explored through dedicated sessions, research presentations, and panel discussions. However, one topic stands out for its growing relevance across every other theme.

Environmental AI Takes Centre Stage

Environmental AI is emerging as a connecting thread throughout the conference. Sessions under this theme examine how modern technologies can strengthen sustainability outcomes across sectors.

Specifically, discussions focus on three areas. First, enhanced environmental data collection. Second, monitoring the health of ecosystems and natural components. Third, tracking environmental compliance more effectively.

Notably, the influence of environmental AI extends beyond its own dedicated sessions. Under the climate change theme, for instance, speakers are also addressing the role of artificial intelligence in supporting climate action, alongside innovative financing models and partnership strategies.

This cross-cutting presence suggests that environmental AI is no longer viewed as a standalone tool. Instead, it is increasingly treated as infrastructure that supports biodiversity tracking, resource management, and climate resilience alike.

The Remaining Themes

Beyond environmental AI, the conference addresses biodiversity through sessions on habitat protection and community involvement in conservation. Meanwhile, the natural resources theme centres on air and water quality, examining their importance to public health and ecosystem stability.

Food security discussions cover the pillars of Dubai’s food strategy, supply chain resilience, and efforts to reduce food loss and waste. The circular economy theme, in turn, highlights resource recovery practices and e-waste recycling opportunities.

Additionally, the climate change theme tackles greenhouse gas reduction, adaptation strategies, and community resilience planning for future decades.

Officials Weigh In

Speaking at the event, Ahmed Mohammed bin Thani, Director-General of DECCA, described the conference as part of a broader effort to build an integrated sustainability framework. He noted that the event encourages participation from the private sector, academia, and the wider community.

He also referenced the UAE’s hosting of COP28 at Expo City Dubai in late 2023, framing DECE as a continuation of that legacy in global environmental dialogue.

Looking Ahead

As the conference concludes its two-day run, its emphasis on environmental AI signals a broader shift in how Dubai approaches sustainability planning. Rather than treating technology as separate from conservation efforts, organisers appear to be positioning environmental AI as a shared tool across biodiversity, food security, and climate initiatives alike.
