On the occasion of Cybersecurity Awareness Month, the Dubai Electronic Security Centre (DESC) announced the launch of the “Scan Smart” campaign. The initiative runs from October 24 to 30, 2025, and aims to raise awareness, empower citizens with cybersecurity knowledge, and prevent QR code-related cyber threats across all audience groups.

As QR codes become more common in restaurants, retail outlets, hotels, and events, DESC reported an increasing risk of tampered or malicious codes. Threat actors can alter public QR codes, redirecting users to phishing sites, installing malware, or stealing personal data.

Reports revealed that over 4.2 million attempts to forge QR codes were detected globally in the first half of 2025. This figure highlights the urgent need for greater awareness and safer scanning habits.

Through the “Scan Smart” campaign, DESC seeks to equip individuals and businesses with the tools to identify legitimate QR codes, avoid tampered ones, and report suspicious activity. The initiative reinforces Dubai’s efforts to build a secure and resilient digital environment.

Yousuf AlShaibani, Chief Executive at the Dubai Electronic Security Centre, said the campaign reflects DESC’s commitment to empowering the public and businesses with practical cybersecurity knowledge. He emphasized that the goal is to make Dubai a safer cyberspace for everyone.

The campaign features an interactive kiosk and an engaging microsite that educate the public on safe QR code practices. It also promotes RZAM, DESC’s free browser extension that detects suspicious websites following QR code scans.

As part of the initiative, a network of F&B venues across Dubai are participating as “Scan Smart Partners.” These venues display campaign-branded materials such as stickers and table tents encouraging safe scanning habits while offering free coffee and exclusive discounts.

  • The “Scan Smart Partner” label identifies venues supporting DESC’s outreach efforts.
  • Participating businesses display the badge on cups, counters, and walls to promote responsible QR code use.

This collaboration turns cafés into micro awareness hubs where digital safety meets daily life. Customers are urged to verify QR codes before scanning to avoid fraudulent content and report suspicious activity through official channels.

The “Scan Smart” campaign aligns with the UAE’s Year of Community initiative, promoting collaboration and safer online practices while supporting DESC’s mission to protect Dubai’s digital ecosystem.
