iPhone Duo is Apple’s first foldable iPhone, combining a 7.6-inch inner display with a compact 5.4-inch outer display. When opened, it is the thinnest iPhone ever, offering a larger canvas for content, gaming, and multitasking.

The inner display also features a nano-texture finish designed to reduce glare. When closed, the outer display provides 90 percent of the screen area of iPhone 18 Pro while maintaining a pocketable design.

Both displays share the same aspect ratio. This allows content to scale proportionally and creates a continuous visual experience as the device opens and closes.

The device is powered by the new A20 Pro chip. It also features an advanced thermal management system, a custom vapor chamber, and a dual-battery architecture.

According to Apple, the camera system also introduces new ways to capture photos and videos that take advantage of the foldable design.

iPhone Duo is available in star white and night sky. Pre-orders begin Friday, October 16, with availability starting Friday, October 23.

Two Displays in One Foldable Design

The iPhone Duo features Apple’s largest iPhone display in a new foldable form factor.

When closed, the device has a 5.4-inch outer Super Retina XDR display. It provides 90 percent of the screen area of iPhone 18 Pro and is designed for comfortable one-handed use.

When opened, the 7.6-inch inner Super Retina XDR display is 50 percent larger than iPhone 18 Pro Max. This gives users more space for apps, content, gaming, and multitasking.

The inner display uses a premium nano-texture finish to reduce glare and reflections. The matte surface also minimizes the visibility of the crease.

Beneath the inner display is a new FaceTime camera that remains hidden when it is not in use. This helps maintain an uninterrupted viewing area.

Both displays support ProMotion, Always On, and up to 3000 nits of peak outdoor brightness.

Later this year, iPhone Duo will also support Apple Pencil with USB-C. Users will be able to take notes, sketch, and mark up documents on either display.

Touch ID is integrated into the side button. Users can authenticate the device whether it is open or closed. The device can also be unlocked using Apple Watch.

Camera Control provides quick access to the camera.

Built for Everyday Durability

Apple says the device is designed to withstand everyday use.

The enclosure is made from grade 5 titanium and features a mirror-polished finish. The hinge cover is 3D-printed and uses a contrasting micro-blasted finish.

Ceramic Shield protects the back, while Ceramic Shield 2 protects the front. According to Apple, Ceramic Shield 2 provides three times better scratch resistance than the previous generation.

The device also has an IP68 rating for splash, water, and dust resistance.

The hinge uses more than 100 components. These components work together to control opening and closing while supporting the center of the display.

Internally, support ribs reinforce the structure. Ceramic fiber inserts within the antenna splits also contribute to frame rigidity.

The inner display has additional protection against everyday wear. A scratch-resistant coating and nano-textured cover layer use a custom polymer with up to 40 percent higher stiffness than other materials used in the industry.

High-strength glass sits above and below the folding display panel. Custom adhesives allow the layers to move past one another like pages in a book, helping reduce bending stress.

A titanium plate at the bottom provides additional reinforcement.

A Camera System Designed Around Folding

The camera system brings several new experiences to the iPhone Duo.

The 48MP Fusion Main camera can capture images at up to 48MP resolution with zero shutter lag. It also captures images at 24MP by default, balancing image quality with file size.

An integrated optical-quality 2x Telephoto allows users to get closer to subjects.

The 48MP Fusion Main camera also uses a new computational image pipeline for sharper details. A large sensor, fast aperture, and sensor-shift optical image stabilization support low-light photography.

The 48MP Fusion Ultra Wide camera is the same camera used on iPhone 18 Pro models. It provides wider fields of view and supports macro photography.

The Center Stage front camera can automatically capture photos and videos in any orientation. This means users do not need to rotate the iPhone for landscape selfies.

Upgraded Photographic Styles add new texture and grain controls. These options provide more control over the appearance of photos.

A FaceTime camera beneath the inner display also supports calls when the device is open or positioned on a surface.

New Camera Experiences

The folding design enables several camera features that use both displays.

Smart Take uses on-device AI models running on A20 Pro to analyze a scene in real time. It can automatically capture a photo when subjects are posing, helping users avoid missing a shot because they are behind the shutter or trying to beat a timer.

Users can also take selfies using the higher-resolution rear cameras while previewing the shot on the outer display.

Duo Preview displays the live camera preview on the outer screen. This allows subjects to check their framing and pose before the photo is captured.

Kid Cue uses Peanuts animations on the outer display to attract children’s attention toward the camera.

Duo FaceTime allows people with the user to join a video call using the outer display. This gives everyone a way to share the moment without crowding around a single screen.

The main camera also supports 4K recording at 120 frames per second in Dolby Vision. This enables slow-motion effects by adjusting playback speed.

Cinematic effects can be applied after capture at up to 60 frames per second. Audio Mix uses new algorithms to improve voice quality and isolate music.

Time-lapse supports 4K in Dolby Vision HDR. Users can also prop the device up to capture longer videos without a tripod.

iOS 27 Adapts to the Foldable Form

iOS 27 is designed around the different ways users can interact with iPhone Duo.

Lock Screen controls, the Home Screen Dock, and app navigation and controls move to the side to make better use of vertical space.

When the device is open, the display shows two Home Screen pages. Today View appears on the left as a vertically scrolling list of customizable widgets.

The status bar uses a circular system that fits into the corner of the display. It shows information such as Wi-Fi, cellular strength, battery status, and more.

The Dynamic Island has also been redesigned for the foldable format. It appears vertically on the side of both the outer and inner displays and expands to show Live Activities and alerts.

Content can react as the device folds. The interface can also reorient when the device is turned sideways and switch to the appropriate display when the device is flipped over.

Apple apps are optimized for the device. Developers can adapt their applications through new and updated APIs in the latest SDKs, along with upcoming support for iPhone Duo in Device Hub in Xcode.

Third-party apps, including Netflix, Zoom, and Slack, are already using the folding design to provide experiences built around the larger display.

Multitasking Gets More Space

The larger display also expands the multitasking experience.

Split View allows users to open two apps side by side on an iPhone for the first time.

Users can quickly switch between apps and open two windows from the same application, such as Safari. They can also save pairs of apps for easier access later.

StandBy has also been expanded.

When placed down, the device can enter StandBy on either the outer or inner display, even when it is not charging. This allows it to function as a photo frame, widget hub, clock, and more.

New Calendar and Weather faces join existing Clock and Modular faces. The Photos face has also been updated to display Shared Albums.

Every StandBy face provides additional customization options, including new colors, fonts, and complications.

A20 Pro Brings More Processing Power

The A20 Pro chip powers the device and is also used in iPhone 18 Pro models.

Combined with the thermal management system, it delivers up to 35 percent better sustained performance than iPhone 17 Pro, according to Apple.

A new chip package inspired by Apple’s M-series silicon connects A20 Pro directly to a custom vapor chamber. This helps dissipate heat during multitasking, gaming, and complex AI workloads.

The new display engine drives both displays simultaneously. It also supports transitions between the inner and outer screens.

The six-core CPU is up to 20 percent faster than A19 Pro. The seven-core GPU is up to 40 percent faster and more power efficient.

A new Dual 16-core Neural Engine provides twice the compute power for on-device AI models.

A20 Pro also provides 50 percent more unified memory bandwidth and is built using a 2-nanometer process technology.

Dual Batteries Support All-Day Use

iPhone Duo uses one high-energy battery on each side of the device. This approach helps maximize capacity while making efficient use of the internal space.

Apple silicon and energy rebalancing algorithms allow the two batteries to operate together as one system.

The device provides up to 31 hours of video playback when using the inner display. With the outer display, it can provide up to 44 hours of video playback.

When both displays are used equally, Apple says users can get up to 24 hours of usage per charge.

Fast charging can reach 50 percent in around 20 minutes. Wireless charging can reach 50 percent in around 30 minutes using a MagSafe or Qi2 charger.

Wireless Connectivity

The device uses an eSIM-only design worldwide. This frees internal space that can be used to maximize battery capacity.

According to Apple, eSIM provides greater flexibility and security compared with traditional physical SIM cards. It is supported by more than 500 carriers worldwide, including e& and du.

iOS 27 also introduces iPhone Handoff. With supported carriers, users can switch between two iPhone models while keeping the same phone number.

The Apple-designed N1 wireless networking chip supports Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6, and Thread.

Meanwhile, C2, Apple’s next-generation cellular modem system, introduces AI-powered improvements for cellular quality and reliability.

New Accessories

Apple is also introducing accessories designed for the foldable device.

The iPhone Duo Folio is available in navy blue and taupe. It includes an integrated kickstand that supports different viewing angles for reading, watching content, or FaceTime.

The kickstand folds away when not in use.

The iPhone Duo Case is available in sand and navy blue. It is designed to be thin and lightweight, with a two-part structure that wraps around both sides of the device.

Both accessories support MagSafe, Qi2 25W, and Qi-certified chargers.

Built-in magnets align the accessories with the device and support wireless charging.

Environmental Considerations

Apple says the device was developed with its environmental goals in mind.

iPhone Duo contains 35 percent recycled content overall. This includes 100 percent recycled cobalt in the battery and 100 percent recycled titanium in the 3D-printed hinge cover.

The device is manufactured using 60 percent renewable energy across the supply chain, including energy from wind and solar sources.

It also meets Apple’s standards for energy efficiency and safe chemistry.

As with other Apple products, the paper packaging is 100 percent fiber-based and can be recycled at home.

Customers in more than 70 countries and regions, including Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, Colombia, France, Germany, India, Japan, Malaysia, Mexico, Singapore, South Korea, Türkiye, the UAE, the UK, the US, and Vietnam, can pre-order from 5 a.m. PT on Friday, October 16.

Availability begins Friday, October 23. The device will become available in 28 additional countries and regions from Friday, October 30.

Apple Intelligence and Satellite Features

Apple Intelligence will be available with iOS 27 from Monday, September 14 for users with an Apple Intelligence-enabled device set to a supported language.

Supported languages include English, Danish, Dutch, French, German, Italian, Norwegian, Portuguese, Spanish, Swedish, Turkish, Vietnamese, Simplified Chinese, Traditional Chinese, Japanese, and Korean.

Siri AI will roll out with iOS 27 as a beta from Monday, September 14 for supported devices set to English. Support for French, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, and Spanish is expected in October.

Some features may vary depending on language and region.

When cellular and Wi-Fi coverage is unavailable, satellite features can help users stay connected and request assistance.

Apple is also extending free access to satellite features for an additional year for existing iPhone 14, iPhone 15, and iPhone 16 users who activated their devices in a country supporting Apple’s satellite features before midnight PT on September 9.
