OpenAI has announced new safety measures for young users of its chatbot, ChatGPT.

The move comes in response to a lawsuit filed by the parents of a teenager who died by suicide. The company revealed that within the next month, it will roll out parental controls designed to notify parents if the system detects that their child is in acute distress.

OpenAI reported that these parental controls will allow families to gain more insight into how teens use ChatGPT. Parents will also have the option to shape their children’s interactions on the platform.

The company further revealed that it is exploring a feature for teens, with parental oversight, to designate a trusted emergency contact.

  • In moments of acute distress, ChatGPT may help connect teens to an emergency contact.
  • The platform will go beyond directing users to resources, offering a direct line to someone who can step in.

OpenAI emphasized that these measures aim to provide stronger protection for teen users while addressing concerns raised in the lawsuit.
