Saudi Arabia is making a massive push into artificial intelligence (AI) with “Project Transcendence,” a bold initiative aimed at establishing the kingdom as a leading global AI hub. Bloomberg reports that Saudi Arabia plans to invest up to $100 billion in the project, which will include data centers, AI startups, and essential tech infrastructure to build a robust local ecosystem.

“Project Transcendence” is backed by the Saudi Public Investment Fund (PIF) and closely follows the structure of Alat—a sustainable manufacturing fund also backed by $100 billion. This new AI entity, expected to be chaired by Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, demonstrates top-level government support and ambition to attract global tech talent and companies to Saudi Arabia.

The project includes a cornerstone partnership with Alphabet Inc.’s Google, focusing on AI advancements and the development of Arabic language AI models. This collaboration, estimated to involve investments between $5 billion and $10 billion, will serve as the foundation for broader AI initiatives within the kingdom. Sources also indicate potential partnerships with other major tech companies, positioning Saudi Arabia as a regional AI leader.

AI development is a key pillar of Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030 plan to diversify its economy beyond oil. As part of its strategy to become one of the world’s top 15 AI nations, Saudi Arabia is enhancing domestic adoption and aims to export AI technologies globally. Initiatives like creating research centers and large-language models comparable to ChatGPT mark substantial progress in its AI journey.

Despite economic challenges such as scaling back on the Neom project, Saudi Arabia remains committed to advancing AI, even exploring a potential $40 billion fund with Andreessen Horowitz to deepen its investment in the sector.

If successful, “Project Transcendence” could establish Saudi Arabia as a global leader in AI, marking a historic shift in its role from oil powerhouse to tech innovator, propelling it to the forefront of the AI industry.
