Saudi authorities have officially launched the first mandatory phase of the unified charging ports initiative, effective January 1, 2025. This move, backed by the Communications, Space and Technology Commission (CST) and the Saudi Standards, Metrology, and Quality Organization (SASO), mandates the use of USB Type-C as the standard charging port for various electronic devices across the Kingdom.

According to a Saudi Gazette report, the unified charging ports policy is designed to enhance user experience, reduce consumer costs, and foster the adoption of high-quality charging and data transfer technologies. In addition to its practical benefits, this initiative also aligns with Saudi Arabia’s environmental sustainability objectives. By reducing electronic waste, the regulation supports the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

The first phase of this initiative covers a wide range of devices, including mobile phones, tablets, digital cameras, e-readers, portable video game consoles, headphones, earphones, portable speakers, amplified speakers, keyboards, computer mice, portable navigation systems, and wireless routers. The next phase is set for April 1, 2026, and will expand the requirement to include laptops, further standardizing charging ports across a broader spectrum of electronic devices.

The phased rollout, first announced on August 6, 2023, aims to ensure that companies and suppliers adopt USB Type-C as the standard charging port, in line with the relevant technical regulations and standards. This initiative reflects Saudi Arabia’s commitment to fostering innovation, reducing electronic waste, and improving the overall user experience in line with global environmental goals.

The shift to USB Type-C marks a significant step toward reducing consumer costs while promoting sustainability, paving the way for a more eco-friendly future in the Kingdom.
