Under the patronage of the World Meteorological Organisation WMO AI, the National Centre of Meteorology (NCM) announced it will host a workshop on Artificial Intelligence (AI) in weather prediction and environmental services. The event will take place at the Centre’s headquarters in Abu Dhabi from 9th to 11th September 2025.

The workshop reflects NCM’s commitment to adopting advanced technologies to enhance the UAE’s capacity in delivering accurate meteorological and climate services. Officials reported that the event will support decision-makers and society in addressing environmental and climate challenges.

The gathering will explore the latest developments in applying AI to environmental datasets, enabling WMO Member States to strengthen national capabilities in forecasting, climate monitoring, hydrology, and marine environmental services. It will also aim to improve hazard warnings and support data-driven decisions.

Experts revealed that discussions will include:

  • Innovative approaches for environmental observations and forecasting systems.
  • Strategies to enhance capacity-building and reduce the digital divide.
  • Best practices for integrating AI into operational services.

Leading experts from public and private sectors, academia, and WMO modelling centres will attend. Participants will exchange knowledge, collaborate on AI-driven solutions, and develop strategies to improve weather prediction and environmental services with transparency and trust.

The workshop will also evaluate current data practices, ensure AI model compatibility, and promote sharing of source codes. It will highlight the role of partnerships in supporting sustainable and reliable forecasts, particularly for least developed countries and small island states.

Organizers announced that the workshop outcomes will inform discussions at the WMO Extraordinary Congress, set for 20th to 24th October 2025, under the theme “WMO Call to the Industry to Collaborate on the Development of AI Models and Tools to Improve the Provision of Weather, Climate, Water and Other Environmental Services.”

The UAE underlined that hosting this event reinforces its role as a regional and international hub for meteorology and environmental AI. It further reflects the nation’s commitment to innovation, sustainability, and providing reliable climate services to address extreme weather and climate change.
