Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority announced the launch of the pilot public WeRide Robotaxi service on the Uber app starting today. The rollout is delivered in partnership with WeRide, a global autonomous driving technology leader, and Uber Technologies. The step also aligns with Dubai’s Self-Driving Transport Strategy.

RTA revealed that WeRide Robotaxi vehicles booked through Uber will operate in Umm Suqeim and Jumeirah. These two areas are located near public beaches and attract a wide range of residents and visitors. The public can book a WeRide Robotaxi by selecting the Autonomous service option within the Uber app.

Ahmed Bahrozyan, CEO of the Public Transport Agency at RTA, reported that the launch builds on the pilot programme announced in April 2025. He said the initiative has undergone continuous testing to support a smooth transition toward autonomous mobility solutions. He explained that a specialist driver remains on board during the pilot phase to ensure safety and that the programme is preparing for a fully driverless service in early 2026.

Jennifer Li, Chief Financial Officer and Head of International at WeRide, said the company’s progress in Dubai is supported by autonomous driving technology tested and validated worldwide. She revealed that WeRide is expanding across the Middle East and globally as it works toward deploying tens of thousands of Robotaxis by 2030. She added that the partnership with RTA and Uber accelerates mainstream adoption of autonomous mobility.

Sarfraz Maredia, Global Head of Autonomous at Uber, stated that Uber is building the future of transportation through a hybrid network of human drivers and autonomous vehicles. He reported that the strong pace of autonomous adoption in the UAE and the Middle East reflects the region’s commitment to transforming mobility. He added that the launch contributes to Dubai’s goal of reaching 25% autonomous journeys by 2030.

The launch reinforces Dubai’s position as a leader in smart mobility. It also supports WeRide and Uber’s plans to scale autonomous operations in the region. WeRide currently operates about 150 autonomous vehicles in the Middle East, including more than 100 Robotaxis.

Dubai continues to record steady population growth, now surpassing 4 million residents. This trend is increasing mobility demand and reliance on app-based ride-hailing services. In 2024, Dubai reported more than 153 million trips across public transport, taxis, and shared mobility. Demand for shared mobility rose by 28% compared with 2023, highlighting the growing need for innovative solutions.
