Axis Communications, a global security and network surveillance technology company, has introduced its latest innovation, the ARTPEC-9 System-on-Chip (SoC). The ARTPEC-9 builds on the capabilities of its predecessors, offering advanced features like improved bitrate efficiency, AI-powered analytics, enhanced imaging, and robust cybersecurity. Notably, ARTPEC-9 is the first network video chip to support the AV1 video encoding standard from the Alliance for Open Media (AOM), delivering superior video quality with reduced storage requirements.

The ARTPEC-9 SoC enables video compression at lower bitrates while maintaining forensic-level video detail. Combined with Axis’ Zipstream technology, this ensures cost-effective video storage without sacrificing performance. “The introduction of AV1 support with ARTPEC-9 provides a unique combination of reduced bitrate and extended client compatibility, which is a major advantage for the industry,” said Johan Paulsson, Chief Technology Officer at Axis Communications.

Axis’ ARTPEC-9 SoC also enhances video quality with its market-leading image processing capabilities, such as Axis Lightfinder and Axis Forensic Wide Dynamic Range (WDR). These technologies allow ARTPEC-9 to deliver high-quality video even under difficult lighting conditions. This results in superior video clarity, faster forensic search capabilities, and minimal false alarms, even in challenging surveillance environments.

In addition to improving video performance, ARTPEC-9 paves the way for more advanced AI analytics. With increased processing power, ARTPEC-9 enables earlier detection of smaller objects, triggering alerts and providing actionable insights for security, safety, and operational management. The chip also enhances object recognition and classification, offering greater accuracy in identifying different object types.

Cybersecurity is a primary focus of the ARTPEC-9 design. Key features such as secure boot and signed operating systems protect devices from potential cyber threats. As ARTPEC-9 is developed in-house by Axis, the company maintains full control over the production process, ensuring the highest security standards.

Axis will begin integrating the ARTPEC-9 SoC into select network video products in early 2025, offering enhanced performance, video quality, and security for surveillance systems worldwide. The integration of AV1 video encoding, along with advanced AI analytics and cybersecurity features, positions ARTPEC-9 as a groundbreaking solution for the future of network video surveillance.
