Meta Platforms has announced plans to begin training its AI models using public content shared by adults in the European Union. The update was shared as part of Meta’s ongoing efforts to improve AI experiences for users across Europe.

The company said it will use public posts, comments, and interactions with its AI systems, including queries and questions. This data will be taken from Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, and Messenger.

According to Meta, the goal is to make its AI models better at understanding Europe’s many languages, cultural expressions, and online behavior. This includes regional dialects, humor, and sarcasm.

The decision follows the launch of Meta AI in Europe last month. It also marks the restart of training activities paused last year due to regulatory concerns.

Starting this week, users in the EU will receive app and email notifications. These will explain the data usage and offer a simple opt-out form. Meta confirmed it will honor all opt-out requests, including those submitted earlier.

Private messages and data from users under 18 will not be used. Meta stressed that privacy remains a priority and that its approach is transparent and respectful of user rights.

The company also stated that its practices are similar to those of others in the industry, such as Google and OpenAI, who use public data to train their AI models.

This move follows confirmation from the European Data Protection Board that Meta’s process aligns with legal requirements.

By using public EU data, Meta aims to deliver more relevant, localized AI tools while staying compliant with Europe’s data protection laws.
