WhatsApp has just announced some cool new features for its Updates tab the spot where Channels and Status live. Over the last two years WhatsApp has been shaping this tab into a place where 1.5 billion people discover fresh content every day.

They revealed plans to help admins organizations and businesses grow on WhatsApp. Here is how they are doing it

First Channel subscriptions let you support your favorite Channels by subscribing and getting exclusive updates for a monthly fee.

Second Promoted Channels will help you find new Channels that match your interests. For the first time admins can boost their Channel’s visibility by promoting them in the directory.

Third Ads in Status will let you find a new product or service. You will soon see ads in Status from businesses making it easier to start a chat with them right away.

What is great is these features only show up in the Updates tab so your personal chats with friends and family stay just as they are. So if you are here mainly to chat nothing changes for you.

Privacy First

WhatsApp reported that privacy remains a top priority. Your messages calls and Status updates stay end-to-end encrypted. That means no one not even WhatsApp can see or hear them.

To show ads you might care about WhatsApp uses limited info like your country city language the Channels you follow and how you interact with ads. If you have linked WhatsApp to Meta’s Accounts Center they may also use your ad preferences and info from other Meta accounts.

Importantly WhatsApp will never sell or share your phone number with advertisers. Your private messages calls and groups will not affect the ads you see.

WhatsApp has been clear about building a business that does not interrupt your personal chats. They believe the Updates tab is the perfect place to bring these new features to life.
